Board games have been around for centuries, stretching all the way back to pre-dynastic Egypt, when a board game called Mehen was popular. Today, board games are more popular than ever. Even though they can get elaborate, with intricate, sometimes incredibly expensive playing pieces (think chess), a fun and engaging board game can be played with little more than a flat surface and a few crude game pieces.

More scholarly, a board game is any game played on a board (that is, a premarked surface) with counters or pieces that are placed on, removed from, or moved across the board. Some board games are incredibly simple. Others, such as Chess, Go, Xiangqi, or Oware, have intense strategic value and have become lasting classics, are quite intricate and complex. Overall, what makes board games so attractive to so many players is the simple fact that they are often playable by all age groups.

There are a wide variety of types and classifications of board games. Some games are simplified simulations of real life. These are games such as Monopoly, which is a rough simulation of the real estate market; Clue (based upon a murder mystery); and Risk, which is one of the best known of thousands of games attempting to simulate warfare and geo-politics.

Other games only loosely attempt to imitate reality, or reflect no reality at all. These generally include abstract strategy games such as Chess, Checkers, Scrabble, and Trivial Pursuit.
